6/11/17 -Theatre Workshop lesson

What we did in class

Today we are looking at Gestus,
Brecht principle concern is to put over a message is such a way that an audience will be in no doubt about the intention of the performance.

an audience should be able to understand each moment by looking at stage picture, believed it was more important the the performance of the actors, a more modern type of performance

language of gesture and facial expression very important to Brechts technique
gestus is about put your message out there by using body, voice, gesture and facial expressions and about the entire picture

We began with pair work across the space trying to relate a nursery rhyme, we then did it again but we added strong vocals big facial expressions, gestures, physicality and we acted as our life depended on it it worked it was a clear way of showing different ways Brechts. This was effective because it allowed us to see that Brecht's way of acting really does work and it allows to communicate clearly not just using voice but our physicality as well

Brechts gift to modern theatre is social usefulness
he liberates theatre from imitations of life and allows different styles of acting to so exist brecht says the story and how you express the story is important, he said "you can never imitate life naturalism gives way to bold outlines comic exaggeration and a collage approach to production to put over a particular message"

Brecht is interested in the story and message, he believed that social situations changed the way people behaved unlike Stanislavsky who believed that anyone could act like anyone. social situations changed the character, not everyone reacts in the same way.
Brecht believed that people are formed by their society, culture and time where they lived.

Brecht said that all theatre should be appropriated to the modern age it should reflect how life is now not the past. For example if your doing a shakespeare play and you want to do it accurately everyone would have to be male and white but brecht believed that theatre should reflect our ag

Another exercise we did was walk around the circle in a grid formation and go into pairs and create different freeze frames they were:
Romeo and Juliet
Summer and Winter
Cat and Mouse
Singing and Dancing
War and Peace
Rich and poor

How Gestus says that gesture can show political opinion on society's situation

the combination of gesture, facial expressions, body language and vocal tone to create meaning and send a message to the audience, the stage picture doesn't just show a message it sums up society's opinion of that situation, hes a social conscious gesture used to provoke debate or educate audiences
